# Footer settings

# Footer settings

Everything below your content: brand block, link columns, social icons, and copyright.

**Admin path:** Appearance → Customize → Vara SaaS → Footer

| Setting | Default | Setting key | Range |
| - | - | - | - |
| **Footer columns** | `4` | `vara_saas_footer_widgets` | 2–4 |
| **Footer contact email** | Your admin email | `vara_saas_footer_email` | — |

| **Footer logo** | *(empty)* | `vara_saas_footer_logo` | Media |
| **Footer logo max width (px)** | `120` | `vara_saas_footer_logo_width` | 40–300 |
| **Social icons alignment** | `left` | `vara_saas_footer_social_align` | `left`, `center`, `right` |

| **Column 1–3 title** | Product, Resources, Company | `vara_saas_footer_col_{n}_title` | — |
| **Column 1–3 links** | Placeholder lists | `vara_saas_footer_col_{n}_links` | — |

**Separately from Site Identity**

The footer logo is a **separate control** from **Appearance → Customize → Site Identity → Logo**.
Setting one does not set the other. The footer logo is typically smaller, or a different mark —
a symbol rather than a full wordmark, for example.

## Footer layout

The footer has two halves.

> **Brand block**
>
> Logo, description paragraph, contact email, and social icons. This is the leftmost column.

> **Link columns**
>
> One to three editable columns of links. The total column count is set by **Footer columns**.

The **Footer columns** setting controls the total, and is clamped between 2 and 4. The first column is always the brand block; the remaining columns are your editable link columns.

| Footer columns | Layout |
| - | - |
| **2** | Brand block + one link column |
| **3** | Brand block + two link columns |
| **4** *(default)* | Brand block + three link columns |

> [!WARNING]
>
> **The default footer link columns contain placeholder links**, including several `#` anchors that go nowhere. Replace them before launch — it is on the [launch checklist](/getting-started/launch-checklist.md).

## Editing link columns

Each link column is a single textarea field with a strict format — **one link per line**, written as:

```text theme={null}
Label|URL
```

The pipe separates the visible label from the destination.

**Working example:**

```text theme={null}
Pricing|/pricing/
Documentation|/docs/
Changelog|/changelog/
Status|https://status.example.com
Support|mailto:support@example.com
```

> [!NOTE]
>
> The pipe character is the separator. If you put a link on multiple lines, or omit the pipe, the theme will not parse it as a link and will render it as plain text.

**Mailto and external links are supported**

A full URL like `https://example.com` works, as does `mailto:you@example.com`. Both are escaped
on output.

## Social icons

Four social slots, each with a URL and an icon.

| Slot | Default icon | Classes |
| - | - | - |
| **Social 1** | X (formerly Twitter) | `fa-brands fa-x-twitter` |
| **Social 2** | LinkedIn | `fa-brands fa-linkedin-in` |
| **Social 3** | GitHub | `fa-brands fa-github` |
| **Social 4** | YouTube | `fa-brands fa-youtube` |

The **Social icons alignment** setting positions them within the brand column.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **A slot with an empty URL is not rendered at all.** Leave a URL blank to hide that icon rather than deleting it.

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Accessibility:** each social icon link carries an accessible label and opens in a new tab. The new-tab behaviour is announced to assistive technology, so screen reader users know the link will leave the site. If you link to an internal page instead, remove the new-tab behaviour via custom CSS or a child theme rather than leaving an inconsistent experience.

## Brand description and email

| Field | Notes |
| - | - |
| **Footer brand description** | One or two sentences. The default is placeholder text — replace it. |
| **Footer contact email** | Defaults to your admin email. Change it to a public contact address. |

## Copyright

The copyright field accepts HTML, filtered through `wp_kses_post`.

The default renders the current year and your site title automatically.

**To keep the default, leave the field alone.** To write your own:

```html theme={null}
© 2026 Acme Inc. All rights reserved. <a href="/legal/terms">Terms</a> · <a href="/legal/privacy">Privacy</a>
```

**Why HTML is allowed here**

Linking your Terms and Privacy pages from the footer is a legal expectation in many jurisdictions.
Allowing markup here saves you needing a child theme for one line of links.

## Footer logo

| Control | Where | Range |
| - | - | - |
| **Footer logo** | Customize → Vara SaaS → Footer | Media picker |
| **Footer logo max width (px)** | Same section | 40–300, default 120 |

Separate from the Site Identity logo, and separately sized. If no footer logo is set, the brand block falls back to your site title.

## Responsive behavior

> **Desktop**
>
> The brand block and link columns sit side by side in a single row, divided by the column count you chose.

> **Tablet and mobile**
>
> Columns stack vertically in order — brand block first, then your link columns. Social icons remain grouped beneath the description.

> **Four columns on a phone**
>
> Four columns stack into a long footer on small screens. If yours feels too long, reduce to two or three columns rather than relying on the breakpoint.

## Common tasks

> **Add a Terms and Privacy link**
>
> Use the copyright field with `wp_kses_post`-permitted HTML, or add them as the last entry in a link column.

> **Remove the link columns entirely**
>
> Set **Footer columns** to 2, then clear the remaining link column textarea. The brand block remains.

> **Hide a social icon**
>
> Clear its URL. Empty slots are not rendered.
