> Feature toggles for the sidebar, scroll to top, page title, breadcrumbs, and theme toggle.

# General settings

# General settings

The feature toggles that decide which parts of the theme appear, and where.

**Admin path:** Appearance → Customize → Vara SaaS → General

## Settings

| Setting | Default | Setting key | Effect |
| - | - | - | - |
| **Enable sidebar** | `true` | `vara_saas_sidebar_enabled` | Site-wide sidebar switch |
| **Enable scroll to top button** | `true` | `vara_saas_scroll_top` | Floating scroll-to-top button |
| **Show page title** | `true` | `vara_saas_page_title` | Theme `h1` on plain pages |
| **Show breadcrumbs** | `false` | `vara_saas_breadcrumbs` | Breadcrumb trail on pages |
| **Show theme toggle in navbar** | `true` | `vara_saas_nav_theme_toggle` | Light/dark switch in the header |

## Enable sidebar

A single global switch.

| Where it applies | Condition |
| - | - |
| Single posts | Always, subject to the Single post layout setting |
| Plain pages | Only if the page's **Sidebar Settings** box says *Show* |
| Archives and search | Never |
| Blog index | Never |

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Turn this off if you have no widgets.** An empty sidebar still reserves its column on wide screens, which reads as a layout bug. See [Sidebars and widgets](/customization/sidebars-and-widgets.md).

## Enable scroll to top button

Off by default in most themes, on here.

The button appears after you scroll past roughly one screenful, sits in the lower corner, and uses your Primary and Surface colors. It is keyboard reachable and has an accessible label.

> [!TIP]
>
> On short pages it never appears — that is correct, not broken. Check it on a long post.

## Show page title

| Value | Plain WordPress pages | Builder pages |
| - | - | - |
| **On** *(default)* | Renders an `h1` with the page title above the content | Suppressed automatically — no change |
| **Off** | Content only | No change |

**When to turn it off**

If your page content starts with its own `h1` — common when a builder is used, or when you paste
headings into the block editor — turning this off prevents a duplicate `h1`. On builder pages it
makes no difference either way, because the theme has already stepped aside.

## Show breadcrumbs

Off by default, and page-only.

| Where | Shown? |
| - | - |
| Pages | Yes, when enabled |
| Single posts | No |
| Archives | No |
| Search results | No |
| Home | No |

When enabled, the trail sits above the page content. If Yoast SEO is active, the theme follows Yoast's breadcrumb settings; otherwise a minimal fallback is generated.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Breadcrumbs help navigation and can produce richer search results, but they need structured data to be worth much. The theme renders the visible trail; your SEO plugin supplies the markup.

## Show theme toggle in navbar

Controls the light/dark switch button in the header.

| Value | Effect |
| - | - |
| **On** *(default)* | Switch is visible in the navbar on desktop |
| **Off** | Switch is hidden |

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Turning this off hides the button; it does not disable dark mode.** Anyone who previously chose dark mode keeps dark mode. If you want to force light mode for everyone, you need a small code change rather than this toggle. See [Dark mode](/customization/dark-mode.md).

## What is not in this section

A few things people look for here.

> **No post or page settings**
>
> Per-page sidebar control is in the page editor's **Sidebar Settings** box, not the Customizer. Post layout is global. See [Single post settings](/customization/single-post-settings.md).

> **No social sharing toggles**
>
> The footer has social icon links you configure in the Footer section. The theme does not add share buttons to posts.

> **No custom CSS field**
>
> Use **Appearance → Customize → Additional CSS** — WordPress's own control — or a child theme. See [CSS and design tokens](/developers/css-and-design-tokens.md).

> **No performance toggles**
>
> The theme loads assets conditionally based on what the page needs. There is nothing to switch. See [Performance](/performance/optimization.md).

## Recommended baseline

For a marketing site with no blog sidebar:

* **Enable sidebar** — Off
* **Scroll to top** — On
* **Show page title** — On, unless your content supplies its own `h1`
* **Show breadcrumbs** — Off for marketing pages; consider On for documentation or product pages
* **Theme toggle** — On, if you have dark mode styled correctly
