# Single post settings

# Single post settings

How individual blog posts are laid out and which metadata they show.

**Admin path:** Appearance → Customize → Vara SaaS → Single Post

## Settings

| Setting | Default | Setting key | Options |
| - | - | - | - |
| **Single post layout** | `sidebar-right` | `vara_saas_single_post_layout` | `sidebar-right`, `sidebar-left`, `fullwidth`, `boxed` |
| **Show post meta** | `true` | `vara_saas_single_post_show_meta` | on / off |
| **Show publish date** | `true` | `vara_saas_single_post_show_date` | on / off |
| **Show author name** | `true` | `vara_saas_single_post_show_author` | on / off |

## Layout options

| Option | Result | Best for |
| - | - | - |
| **Sidebar right** *(default)* | Content left, sidebar right | Blogs with a widget sidebar |
| **Sidebar left** | Sidebar left, content right | Mirrored layouts |
| **Full width** | Content spans the full container, no sidebar | Long-form technical writing |
| **Boxed** | Content in a narrower centered column | Editorial, comfortable reading |

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Turning on "Show post meta" is required for the date and author toggles to have any effect.** The master switch comes first — with it off, the date and author settings are inert regardless of their own values.

**The sidebar also needs to exist**

`sidebar-right` and `sidebar-left` only render a column if the site-wide **Enable sidebar** switch
is on *and* the sidebar has widgets. Otherwise the content takes the full width. See
[Sidebars and widgets](/customization/sidebars-and-widgets.md).

## Metadata controls

Three switches working together.

> **Show post meta — the master switch**
>
> Controls the whole byline block: author avatar, name, role, publish date, and reading time. If this is off, none of it renders.

> **Show publish date**
>
> The published date within the byline. Requires **Show post meta** to be on.

> **Show author name**
>
> The author's name and avatar. Requires **Show post meta** to be on. The role beneath the name follows this switch.

Reading time is part of the meta block and does not have its own switch. It is calculated at 200 words per minute.

> [!NOTE]
>
> If a post's author has no public role label, the theme shows **Contributor** instead. To display a specific role such as *Principal Engineer*, set it in the user profile under **Users → All Users → Edit → Profile**.

## What a single post renders

Top to bottom:

1. **Category pills** — with a "(+N)" overflow control if there are many
2. **The `h1` title**
3. **The excerpt**, if one is set
4. **The byline** — avatar, name, role, date, reading time
5. **The featured image**
6. **The table of contents** — automatic, from your `h2` and `h3` headings
7. **The content**
8. **Tag pills**, with the same overflow control
9. **Related reading** — up to two posts sharing a category
10. **Comments**

### Table of contents

Generated automatically. The theme scans post content for `h2` and `h3` elements, assigns each a unique slugged ID, injects those IDs into the markup, and builds a linked outline.

| Question | Answer |
| - | - |
| Do I need to configure it? | No. Add headings and it appears. |
| Where does it appear? | In the sidebar when a sidebar is active; inline above the article otherwise |
| Which headings are included? | `h2` and `h3` only. `h4` and below are ignored. |
| What highlights the current section? | A script tracks scroll position and marks the active link |
| Does it work with Elementor posts? | Not reliably — it reads post content, not a rendered Elementor document |

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Duplicate heading text produces duplicate anchor slugs.** The theme de-duplicates by appending a suffix, but distinct headings are cleaner. Long posts also benefit from deliberate hierarchy: an `h1` in the title, then `h2` sections, then `h3` subsections.

### Related reading

Up to two posts sharing at least one category with the current post, excluding itself.

**Related posts depend on your categories**

If every post sits in one catch-all category, related posts will be arbitrary. A few focused,
consistently used categories produce genuinely useful suggestions.

### Category and tag overflow

When a post has more categories or tags than fit, the extras collapse behind a "(+N)" pill that expands on click or keyboard. The control uses `aria-expanded` and `aria-controls`, so it is announced correctly by screen readers.

### Password-protected posts

A password-protected post renders **only** the title and the password form. Content, featured image, table of contents, tags, related posts, and comments are all suppressed until the post is unlocked. The theme provides its own styled password form.

## Per-post overrides

There are none for single posts — layout is controlled globally here.

For **pages**, the **Sidebar Settings** box in the page editor provides a per-page sidebar override that defaults to hidden. For **posts built with Elementor**, the theme steps aside entirely and the builder owns the layout — see [Elementor](/integrations/elementor.md).
