# Setup wizard

# Setup wizard

The setup wizard is the fastest way from a fresh install to a complete, editable website. It does three things in order, and you can stop after any of them.

## Getting there

**1. Go to Appearance → Vara SaaS Setup**

This page appears in your admin menu once the theme is active.

**2. Or use the activation banner**

Right after activating the theme, a banner appears on the Dashboard offering the same flow. You can dismiss the banner and come back later — dismissing it does not cancel the wizard.

## The three steps

### Step 1 — Install Elementor

The wizard checks whether Elementor is installed and active. If it is, this step is already complete and is marked done. If not, you get two options:

* **Install and activate** — the wizard installs Elementor from the WordPress.org repository and activates it for you
* **I have it already** — use this if Elementor is installed but deactivated, or if your host restricts automatic installs

> [!NOTE]
>
> The install runs through WordPress's standard plugin upgrader. It requires the `install_plugins` capability, and the request is protected with a nonce. On locked-down hosts the automatic install can fail — see [Setup wizard issues](/troubleshooting/setup-wizard-issues.md).

### Step 2 — Import the demo content

This creates four finished pages and wires them into WordPress:

| Page | Slug | Assigned template |
| - | - | - |
| **Home** | `/home/` | Page Builder Full Width |
| **About** | `/about/` | Page Builder Full Width |
| **Services** | `/services/` | Page Builder Full Width |
| **Contact** | `/contact/` | Page Builder Full Width |
| **Blog** | `/blog/` | Default |

Alongside the pages, the import:

* Sets **Settings → Reading → Your homepage displays** to *A static page*
* Sets the **Home** page as the front page and the **Blog** page as the posts page
* Writes the Elementor layout JSON for each page
* Clears Elementor's cached assets so the new layouts render immediately
* Creates a **Primary Menu** if one doesn't exist, points it at those pages, and assigns it to the **Primary Menu** location

> [!WARNING]
>
> **The import changes your front page and your navigation.** If you already have a site, it repoints *Your homepage displays* to a static page and replaces the primary menu. Back up first, and read [Demo content](/introduction/demo-content.md) before running it on a live site.

### Step 3 — Done

The final step links you straight into Elementor to start editing the homepage. There's nothing to configure here — it exists so you know the wizard finished successfully.

## Managing the created pages afterwards

The theme tracks every page it creates, so it can clean up after itself and avoid duplicates. Each managed page is recorded in two ways:

* A dedicated option, such as `vara_saas_home_page_id`
* Post meta `_vara_saas_theme_page` holding the page's role (`home`, `blog`, `about`, `services`, `contact`) and `_vara_saas_theme_page_origin` marking it as theme-created

Those markers mean:

> **Renaming is safe**
>
> Change a managed page's title or slug freely. The theme finds it by its stored ID and meta, not by slug.

> **Deleting is handled**
>
> If you trash or delete a managed page, the theme clears its stored ID and resets *Your homepage displays* back to "Your latest posts" if the deleted page was the front page.

**Why this matters**

These safeguards are why the theme can offer a one-click demo import without risking damage to
pages you wrote yourself. It only ever auto-removes pages it can prove it created.

## Re-running the import

You can run the import again at any time from **Appearance → Vara SaaS Setup**.

The theme will not create duplicates. It reuses the existing pages it already manages and overwrites their Elementor layouts.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Re-running the import **overwrites the Elementor content of Home, About, Services, and Contact**. Any design work you've done on those four pages is lost. Back up, or copy your work into an Elementor template first. See [Demo pages](/templates/demo-pages.md).

## Running the wizard manually instead

If your host blocks the automatic Elementor install, do it by hand:

**1. Install Elementor**

**Plugins → Add New → Search "Elementor" → Install Now → Activate**

**2. Return to the wizard**

Reload **Appearance → Vara SaaS Setup**. Step 1 now shows as complete.

**3. Run step 2**

Click **Import demo content**.

## After the wizard

> **[Brand it](/getting-started/colors.md)**
>
> Set your colors so the whole site — including Elementor — follows your brand.

> **[Set your identity](/getting-started/site-identity.md)**
>
> Logo, site title, tagline, and favicon.

> **[Build your menu](/customization/header-and-menus.md)**
>
> Replace the demo menu items with your own.
