# SEO

> The SEO the theme outputs by default, and what to add on top.

# SEO

The theme outputs sensible basics. It is not an SEO plugin, and you should install one.

**Short version**

The theme gives you Open Graph tags, a theme-color meta tag, and one `WebSite` JSON-LD block.
That is genuinely useful and it does not conflict with Yoast or Rank Math. It is not a substitute
for title templates, meta descriptions, XML sitemaps, or per-post metadata.

## What the theme outputs

### Open Graph

Tags describing your page for social sharing.

| Tag | Source |
| - | - |
| `og:site_name` | Your site title |
| `og:type` | `website` |
| `og:title` | The page title |
| `og:description` | The excerpt or site tagline |

### Theme color

A `meta name="theme-color"` tag reflecting your brand, used by mobile browsers to tint browser chrome around the page.

**This is a small but real win**

On Android, Chrome and other browsers use `theme-color` to colour the address bar. It is why the
browser chrome matches your brand rather than being generically grey.

### Structured data

A minimal `WebSite` JSON-LD block containing your site name and URL.

```json theme={null}
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "WebSite",
  "name": "Your Site Title",
  "url": "https://example.com"
}
```

> [!NOTE]
>
> Only `WebSite`. The theme does not output `Article`, `Product`, `BreadcrumbList`, or `Organization` schema. Your SEO plugin handles those.

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Install an SEO plugin.** WordPress's own output for titles is minimal, and meta descriptions strongly influence click-through rate from search results. This is the one place where the theme's minimalism genuinely costs you.

## Priority list

Do these in order. The first three matter most.

**1. Install an SEO plugin**

Yoast or Rank Math.

**2. Configure your defaults**

Site title, tagline, and social profiles. One-time, fifteen minutes.

**3. Write titles and descriptions for your five most important pages**

Home, About, Services, Contact, and your main product or pricing page.

**4. Generate and submit your XML sitemap**

In the SEO plugin, then submit it in Google Search Console.

**5. Set your social sharing image**

1200 × 630 px. The theme outputs the Open Graph tags; the image comes from your SEO plugin or featured image.

**6. Verify in Google Search Console**

Use URL Inspection on your homepage to confirm indexing.

## Writing titles and descriptions

> **Titles**
>
> Aim for roughly 50–60 characters. Front-load the important words. Put your brand at the end rather than the start, so the descriptive part is what people read first.

> **Descriptions**
>
> Roughly 150–160 characters. This is ad copy, not a summary. Include a reason to click.

> **One H1 per page**
>
> The theme outputs one `h1` per page on its own templates. If your content adds another, turn off **Show page title** in the Customizer. See [General settings](/customization/general-settings.md).

## Images and SEO

| Practice | Why |
| - | - |
| Set alt text on every image | Screen readers and image search both need it |
| Use descriptive filenames | `product-dashboard-dark-mode.png`, not `IMG_4821.png` |
| Set a featured image on every post | Drives your social preview and archive cards |
| Keep file size reasonable | Slow pages rank worse |

## Technical SEO the theme handles

> **Semantic heading order**
>
> One `h1` per page with a descending hierarchy — a fix in version 1.0.7.

> **Single main landmark**
>
> Exactly one `main` element per page, so screen readers and crawlers get a clear structure.

> **Descriptive link text**
>
> Screen-reader-only labels on pagination and icon-only links.

> **Skip link**
>
> The first focusable element on every page.

Accessibility and SEO overlap substantially. A well-structured page is easier for both to parse.

## Site structure

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Keep your URL slugs short and permanent.** Changing a page's slug after it is indexed means a 404 for anyone holding an old link. If you must change one, set up a redirect in your SEO plugin — do not simply change the slug and hope.
