# Setup wizard and demo import issues

> Elementor won't install, the import fails, or the pages came in empty.

The wizard does three things: install Elementor, import four demo pages, and wire up your reading settings and menu. Each can fail independently.

## Elementor will not install

> **The install button does nothing**
>
> A plugin conflict, or a nonce failure. Open the browser console and look for a JavaScript error. If you recently installed a plugin, deactivate it and retry.

> **An error during download**
>
> Usually the host blocking outbound requests to `downloads.wordpress.org`, or a filesystem permission problem. Install it manually as a workaround, and ask your host about the restriction.

> **Installed but will not activate**
>
> Almost always a PHP memory or version issue. Check **Tools → Site Health → Info → Server**.

### Install Elementor manually

The wizard's automatic install is a convenience, not a requirement.

**1. Go to Plugins → Add New**

**2. Search for Elementor**

**3. Install, then Activate**

**4. Reload the wizard**

**Appearance → Vara SaaS Setup**. Step 1 now shows as complete.

**5. Run step 2**

Click **Import demo content**.

> [!WARNING]
>
> **Do not attempt the automatic install repeatedly.** Each attempt calls WordPress's plugin upgrader, which requires the `install_plugins` capability and a valid nonce. Repeated failures usually indicate a permissions or host-restriction problem that will not resolve itself.

## The import fails

> **An error appears and no pages are created**
>
> Almost always a permissions problem. WordPress needs to write to the database and to `wp-content/uploads/`. Check that your host's PHP has write access, and that file permissions are correct.

> **Some pages created, others missing**
>
> The import timed out mid-way. Re-run it — the theme reuses pages it already manages rather than creating duplicates.

> **Pages exist but are empty**
>
> Usually Elementor's cache was not cleared, or the Elementor data failed to write. Re-run the import, then **Elementor → Tools → Regenerate CSS & Data**.

> **The button is greyed out**
>
> Elementor is not installed or not active. The import requires it.

## Pages render blank after a successful import

This is the most common "successful" import failure, and the fix is usually Elementor's cache.

**1. Regenerate Elementor's CSS and data**

**Elementor → Tools → Regenerate CSS & Data**.

**2. Open the page in Elementor**

**Pages → Home → Edit with Elementor**. Confirm the content loads in the editor. If it does, the data is fine and it is a front-end cache issue.

**3. Clear every cache**

Page cache, object cache, CDN, and your browser's cache.

**4. Check your front page setting**

**Settings → Reading** must show *A static page* with Home selected, or the homepage template will not render the Elementor layout.

> [!WARNING]
>
> **If *Settings → Reading → Your homepage displays* is set to "Your latest posts", your homepage renders the blog, not the Elementor layout.** This is the single most common reason for "the import said it worked but my homepage is my blog".

## The contact page form is empty

Expected, and not a bug.

> [!WARNING]
>
> The demo Contact page contains a Contact Form 7 shortcode with a **hardcoded form ID** that was valid only on the original author's site. On your install no such form exists.

Fix:

1. Install and activate Contact Form 7
2. Create a form at **Contact → Contact Forms**
3. Open the Contact page in Elementor
4. Replace the Contact Form 7 widget with a new one and select your form

Full instructions: [Contact Form 7](/integrations/contact-form-7.md).

## Pages were created but the menu is wrong

> **No menu appears**
>
> Check **Appearance → Menus → Settings → Primary Menu** and confirm a menu is assigned. See [Header and menus](/customization/header-and-menus.md).

> **Menu items point to old URLs**
>
> The import refreshes its own menu items. If you renamed or moved pages, edit the menu manually.

> **Duplicate menu items**
>
> You likely ran the import while a stale menu existed. Edit the menu and remove duplicates.

## Front page settings are wrong

Check **Settings → Reading** against this:

| Setting | Expected value |
| - | - |
| **Your homepage displays** | A static page |
| **Homepage** | Your Home page |
| **Posts page** | Your Blog page |

## Re-running the import

You can run it again at any time.

**It will not create duplicates**

The theme tracks the pages it created and reuses them, overwriting their Elementor layouts.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Re-running **overwrites the Elementor content** of Home, About, Services, and Contact, and it re-applies the reading settings and menu. Save your work first — ideally as an Elementor template.

## If nothing works

**1. Check Site Health**

**Tools → Site Health → Status** — it names most permission and PHP issues directly.

**2. Check file permissions**

`wp-content/` and `wp-content/uploads/` should be writable by your web server user.

**3. Check for a conflicting plugin**

Deactivate all plugins except Elementor and try again.

**4. Try a clean test**

On a scratch install, run the wizard. If it works there, the problem is specific to your site.

**5. Report it**

[WordPress.org support forum](https://wordpress.org/support/theme/vara-saas/) with your WordPress, PHP, and Elementor versions, plus what you saw.
